For each post, I want to reflect on a recent piece of work I've seen or found that inspired me, especially in relation to my thesis project. Each post would carry out with a cover image, link to the project, and a short 200 word description of what in particular stuck out.
The first piece of inspiration I've found is from the French school Gobelins. Gobelins (I believe pronounced GO - Bla - N) is an animation school where some of the best storytellers, illustrators, and animators practice their craft in telling animated stories. I hope to go there some day.
Every year, graduate projects release around the spring time in which logging onto the Youtube, I carefully score whichever catches my eye. One of the most captivating things about Gobelins students is the range in work. No two student take on the same style, each film lives and breathes as a unique voice from the list of directors.
The short film I pulled today is called, The Story of the Three Sisters. Directed by: Raphaëlle BOURGON, Anchi HUANG, Vega LAZARO, Son Tra LE, Priyam PARIKH, Jianuo WEN, and Di WU, the project centers on the telling of how there came to be 4 seasons. I'll avoid my thoughts on the narrative itself and instead focus on a particular scene of animation I found moving.
At about the 2:00 minute mark, the film takes an a daring sequence of colored effects with textured detail that simply floored me! Each scene radiates with colors so bright and beautiful, all awhile the score/music begins to swell up until this drum just bashes breaking the colors down. Everything feels beautifully orchestrated as one complete scene. To me, that's passion. Those colors, lighting, effects, texture, sound, are all passion.
For both the score of what I imagine my project to be, and the color effect I am aiming to animate using LEDs, I will use that particular scene for reference.
I think from a technical point, there's something about the softer textured (pastel-like) mixed with the saturated colors that sits is unique to me and resonates as passion. I think the challenge is gonna be, how do I capture that with LEDs, what material can I layer over it to create the desired look? I guess it'll take some playing around with!
